Presentation of the World Nuclear Industry Status Report 2024: Clear Facts on Nuclear Power Worldwide
The World Nuclear Industry Status Report 2024 was released today. The report provides a comprehensive overview of the global status of nuclear power, examining its role in comparison to renewable energy sources. It delivers up-to-date data and well-founded analyses, highlighting, in particular, Europe’s dependence on Russian nuclear fuel and the increasing militarisation of civilian nuclear power plants.
Jutta Paulus, the Green group’s spokesperson on environmental policy in the European Parliament, commented on the release of the report with strong words:
“Putin is rubbing his hands together in delight at the resurgence of nuclear debates in Europe. We remain heavily dependent on Russia for uranium, which benefits neither the free democratic world nor our economy.
The World Nuclear Industry Status Report 2024, compiled by independent experts, concludes unequivocally that nuclear energy is a dead end for Europe’s industry and energy independence. The EU’s significant reliance on uranium and Russian nuclear technology is deeply concerning. Furthermore, the war in Ukraine starkly demonstrates the risks that nuclear power plants, like Zaporizhzhia, pose in military conflicts.
The current European enthusiasm for so-called ‘small modular reactors’ (SMRs) is completely baffling. Not a single commercial project has been realised to date. Most concepts require highly enriched uranium, which the EU sources solely from Russia. These PowerPoint reactors have no place in a realistic energy policy. They divert attention from genuine solutions—renewable energy, energy storage, grid expansion, and energy efficiency.”
Background:
The World Nuclear Industry Status Report has been published annually since 1992 by an international team of renowned scientists and nuclear physicists. It is considered the most comprehensive and well-grounded analysis of global nuclear power developments. The report is released annually and provides a reliable and independent assessment of the current global nuclear landscape, based on hard data. With its clear focus on safety, economic, and environmental issues, the WNISR makes an indispensable contribution to the international debate on the future of energy supply.
