Jessica Roswall confirmed: “She must do her homework now”

After a prolonged night of negotiations regarding the confirmation of Jessika Roswall as the new Environment Commissioner, coordinators have finally given the green light.

Jutta Paulus, environmental spokesperson of the Green Party in the European Parliament, comments:

“Ms. Roswall’s confirmation as the new Environment Commissioner was a close call. This was far from a smooth process: too many platitudes, a lack of expertise, and dozens of unanswered questions. It was anything but confident.

European environmental and nature protection policy requires a determined and reliable advocate. Considering the expected catastrophic environmental and climate policies from the Trump administration, the EU must provide a strong response: with a Climate Adaptation Law that prioritises nature-based solutions such as the revitalisation of peatlands and forests. These measures can help mitigate droughts and heavy rainfall, reduce temperatures, and support healthy ecosystems that store CO₂, protect biodiversity, and underpin our long-term food security.

Together with the designated Climate Commissioner, Wopke Hoekstra, she must deliver on this. For Roswall to fulfill this role, she must do her homework now. We Greens will work with Ms. Roswall in a factual and constructive manner.”
